Datsun 1400.

Our own piece, not a client's. A long-form editorial page about the bakkie South Africa built for thirty-seven years.

The Datsun 1400 home page, as it runs today

The brief.

We built this to test how far a single scrolling page can carry a subject, using one we care about. Six chapters cover the Sunny lineage, the design, the engine, its working life and its legacy, ending in an archival gallery. The opening section stays pinned and assembles as you scroll. The A14 engine is a WebGL model you can rotate by hand. Every fact is sourced and credited at the foot of the page, and the page states clearly that it is an independent tribute with no connection to the manufacturer.

What we built.

  • Six chapters on one page: heritage, design, the machine, the working life, the legacy and an archive
  • A pinned hero that assembles its type as you scroll into it
  • The A14 engine as a WebGL model you can rotate
  • Editorial copy throughout, with the sources listed and credited
  • An archival gallery, captioned like plates in a book
  • A standing notice that it is an independent tribute, unaffiliated with the manufacturer
